Pilibhit: A 59-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling charas from Nepal for its illegal peddling in India.
On August 1 in 2021, an FIR was lodged against Karnail Singh at Madhotanda police station, after a joint team of Madhotanda police and Sashastra Seema Bal's 49th battalion arrested the convict near village Dhuria Palia. Around 900 grams of charas was recovered from him while he was enroute to his native village Akbarpur from Nepal.
The public prosecutor, Ravi Gangwar, produced before the court a series of witnesses and concrete evidence, pleading that the accused was not worthy of being granted any mercy as he not only flouted the laid-down law but also got involved in activities aimed at promoting drug addiction in society.
After hearing arguments from both sides on Wednesday evening, the court of additional district and sessions Judge for the NDPS Act Chandra Mohan Mishra found him guilty of the crime. The convict was also slapped with a penalty worth Rs 1 lakh, with an order for an extension of imprisonment for a further one year, if the fine was not paid.
