AHMEDABAD: The Income Tax (I-T) department of Gujarat, observing the taxpayer redressal week from March 4, has received a total of 241 complaints till March 8. The week will continue to March 11 and 12, said I-T officials.
“Out of the total, 167 complaints were lodged with different offices of I-T across Gujarat whereas 74 complaints were sent to our online portal.

Majority of the grievances were related to refunds, demand certification, effect of an appeal, deduction of TDS and wrong or non-reflected transactions,” said a senior I-T official.
“Some of the companies raised the issue of processing returns for immediate and previous financial years whereas some had received notices. All the complaints are being reviewed by our senior officials and we will soon revert with responses,” the official added.
Prakash Kapadia, spokesperson of city-based taxpayers’ protection organization, said that they have represented grievances such as freezing of small taxpayers by the department, setting target of income tax collection by CBDT and false assessment by the I-T officials. “All the issues are detrimental to small taxpayers who have harrowing experience with the department. Officers are threatening taxpayers if they cannot pay the penalty, which is against the law,” Kapadia said.
