Ahmedabad: Two days after a woman jumped to her death while trying to escape a fire at a residential building in Hansol, the city witnessed four major fires in 24 hours. The most devastating blaze broke out on Friday afternoon at a chemical factory in Vatva GIDC Phase 4, where two workers suffered serious burn injuries and five others received minor injuries.
The fire broke out at Jay Shree Industries, which stores solvents and ethyl products. These chemicals accelerated the spread of the fire, which engulfed nearby units and vehicles.
Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) deployed 19 vehicles to bring the blaze under control. Senior police officials also reached the site and supervised the firefighting operation.
Two injured workers, aged 55 and 40, were admitted to LG Hospital with 70% and 19% burns respectively. According to fire officials, the kind of chemicals stored at the site necessitated additional safety measures and careful firefighting strategies.
Three more fires broke out in the city in 24 hours. Late on Thursday night, a fire broke out at Andaz Party Plot near SG Road. The blaze damaged stored materials, including wood and decorative materials. Seven fire tenders were dispatched to the spot. No injuries were reported.
At the same time, around 11.15 pm, a fire erupted at a fruit market in Kalupur.
Four shops were affected. Nine fire tenders reached the spot and contained the fire in one hour. Officials said the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault. There were no casualties.
Another fire was reported in the parking area of Venus Atlantis building on Prahladnagar Road on Friday. The blaze consumed eight two-wheelers before it was extinguished. Local residents claimed that firemen reached the spot late. A string of similar incidents has raised questions about fire safety measures in industrial, commercial and public spaces.
