Agra: Justifying the attack by Karni Sena workers on Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman's Agra residence, BJP MPs on Thursday said the "insult on Rajput ruler Rana Sanga is not merely an insult to one individual, but to all patriots, something none can tolerate".
Union minister and Agra MP SP Singh Baghel, in a statement, said, "Rana Sanga is our shared ancestor and a symbol of valour. As long as the earth exists, his extraordinary saga of bravery and sacrifice will be respectfully remembered by patriots... His life will continue to inspire us with fearlessness, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the motherland."
The ruling party's Fatehpur Sikri MP Rajkumar Chahar termed it a "natural reaction" as the statement made by the Samajwadi Party MP "crossed the limits of appeasement".
"You can glorify Babur and Aurangzeb to seek votes from a particular community, it is in your DNA... But how can you make such statements about Rana Sanga? When the youths saw your statement, it was a natural reaction. Youths may make mistakes. Suman's supporters also pelted stones from the roof, which raised sentiments," Chahar added.
While a defiant UP state chief of Karni Sena, Neeraj Singh Chauhan, told TOI: "We've decided to carry out a much bigger protest in Agra on April 12 -- the birth anniversary of Rana Sanga. People from western UP, Rajasthan and MP will join us. We'll continue our protests till Suman tenders an unconditional apology."
Meanwhile, senior SP leaders, Ram Gopal Yadav and Shivpal Yadav, visited Suman's house in Agra on Thursday in a show of support. After meeting Suman's family, Ram Gopal said the "SP leader was paying the price of being a Dalit". He alleged the attack was "pre-planned" and authorities were aware of it, yet they couldn't take preemptive action. The CM was present at an event nearby, but the local administration failed to act in the matter, he said.
He questioned how Karni Sena members came with bulldozers, sticks and swords, but they were not stopped. "Attackers had govt support," Ram Gopal alleged. Shivpal concurred with Ram Gopal's statements.
Suman, on Thursday, refused to apologise for his remarks. "I will not apologise in this life, I do not know about the next life. They need to learn to accept the truth...," he told a news agency.
Politics erupted in Parliament too. Opposition parties, including SP and Congress, staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha protesting the Chair's refusal to discuss the Agra violence.
Suman's Agra residence was attacked by Karni Sena workers on Wednesday for his recent remark on the Rajput ruler. A video of the Rajya Sabha MP surfaced recently in which he is purportedly heard saying that Rana Sanga had "invited" Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. Rana Sanga or Sangram Singh I was the ruler of Mewar from 1508 to 1528.
