Tesla CEO
Elon Musk, who has been vocal about declining population across the world, has once again warned, saying it is an “existential crisis” for humanity. The tech billionaire was responding to a 60 Minutes report on Japan’s population decline, where birth rates have dropped to 1.3 children per woman. This declining population has resulted in a net loss of nearly a million people annually, as reported by CBS News on April 27, 2025. Replying to the post, Musk wrote:
Yeah, I’ve been warning about this for a long time.
We don’t want entire cultures to disappear!
Elon Musk calls population decline an ‘existential crisis’
Elon Musk directly responded to a viral X post by DogeDesigner that highlighted the record-low fertility rate in Japan, US and Australia. In the post, DogeDesigner wrote:
A friendly reminder to make more babies!
Japan's total fertility rate for 2024 was reported to hit an all-time low. Last year, more than two people died for every baby born.
U.S. birth rates hit 40-year low.
Australia's birth rate is at an all-time-low.
Musk responded, saying “It is an existential crisis!”
“Population collapse is an existential problem,” he wrote in another post.
Japan sees record drop in population
As per official data released on Monday, Japan's citizen population dipped to 120.3 million as of October 2024, marking a record drop of 898,000 people from 2023. This marks the largest annual decrease since comparable records began in 1950. Including foreign residents, the total population stood at 123.8 million, reflecting a decrease of 550,000 people. This is the 14th consecutive year of overall population decline.
Elon Musk compares current population decline with Romans
Earlier this month, Elon Musk talked about the current population decline. In a post, the Tesla CEO highlighted a historical trend where prosperous civilisations, like the Romans around 50 BC, experience population declines due to low birth rates, a pattern he sees repeating today. He claimed that Roman Empire's failure to reverse this trend.
Musk response came in a reply to a post which claimed that the 3 things that is driving the change the cost-benefit of kids are:
Kids no longer earn — some stay in school til they’re 30.Kids cost a lot because of inflation and college.Government pensions mean don't need kids when you’re old.
