Carney's Liberals fall short of Canada majority government: CBC
Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals will have a minority government in Canada's next parliament after falling just short of the 172 needed for majority control, the public broadcaster CBC said Tuesday.
Carney's party had 169 confirmed seats with two races left to call, a setback for the Liberals, but a result that puts them in strong position to pass legislation, including measures to confront US President Donald Trump.
Carney vows to lead 'united Canada' against Trump after election win
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister, made a commitment on Tuesday to challenge President Donald Trump, emphasising the strength of Canadian unity following a significant electoral victory that secured another term for the Liberal Party.
The Liberals, under Carney's leadership, were confirmed to establish the next government, though uncertainty remained about achieving a majority, as results from several of Canada's 343 electoral districts were still pending.
Whilst they might not reach the necessary 172 seats, CBC, the public broadcaster, has maintained its position of not declaring the final outcome, noting that remaining votes in certain constituencies could potentially secure a Liberal majority.
In response to a campaign heavily influenced by Trump's tariff policies and territorial threats, Carney announced his intention to establish a different approach in response to America's recent antagonistic stance towards free trade.
"We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7," Carney said.
"It is time to be bold, to meet this crisis with the overwhelming positive force of a united Canada," he stated, highlighting the importance of cross-party collaboration.
This victory represented a remarkable turnaround for the Liberals, who had recently appeared to be facing complete electoral defeat.

Liberal gains in Quebec played a pivotal role in securing Prime Minister Mark Carney's victory in the federal election. The party captured 43 seats in the province, surpassing their 2021 total of 35. A significant surge in Montreal and the South Shore, including former Bloc Québécois ridings, helped the Liberals expand their foothold. Notable flips included La Prairie-Atateken and Longueuil-Saint-Hubert. While the Bloc Québécois remained strong in some areas, the Liberals' Quebec successes contributed to a potential majority, with Carney pledging to unite Canadians and ensure Quebec’s prosperity within Canada.
Canada election: Liberals sweep Toronto, but Tories lead on key Ontario seats
Mark Carney’s Liberals are set to form government following a closely contested federal election, with the party dominating in Toronto but facing stiff competition across the Greater Toronto Area. While the Liberals secured nearly every seat in the city, the Conservatives made gains in key 905 ridings like Vaughan-Woodbridge and Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill. As of Tuesday morning (local time), several seats—particularly in Brampton and Milton—remain too close to call, leaving the question of a majority government still open. The NDP failed to win any seats in Ontario, prompting leader Jagmeet Singh to resign.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre will lose his own seat in Parliament
In a dramatic turnaround, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party won the 2025 federal election, with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre losing his own seat. Once favored to win, Poilievre's Trump-style rhetoric and "Canada First" campaign faltered amid US President Donald Trump's trade war and provocative remarks suggesting Canada become the 51st US state. The backlash sparked a wave of nationalism that boosted Liberal support. Carney emphasized Canadian unity and independence in his victory speech, warning that Canada must adapt to a changed global reality. The Liberals may still need smaller parties to govern if they fall short of a majority.

Carney has expressed interest in strengthening trade ties with India and rebuilding trust, marking a shift from Trudeau’s confrontational stance, especially after the Nijjar controversy. While the new Liberal government plans to cap immigration and tighten rules around international student intake, Indian students and skilled workers may still benefit from streamlined processes and a focus on integrating those already in Canada. Mark Carney warns Canadians in Liberal Party victory speech: 'Trump is trying to break us'
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election on Monday, securing a fourth consecutive term in a dramatic political comeback driven by growing nationalist sentiment and tensions with the United States. With polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more seats than the Conservatives in the 343-member Parliament, though it remained uncertain whether they had secured an outright majority.
The turnaround followed US President Donald Trump’s renewed annexation threats and trade war rhetoric, including a provocative claim on election day that Canada should become America’s 51st state. These comments inflamed public sentiment and energised support for the Liberals.
Carney, addressing supporters in Ottawa, said, “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” warning Canadians that “President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us.”
The Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who had positioned the election as a referendum on former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, conceded defeat. Running a Trump-style campaign may have backfired, as some voters viewed him as a “mini-Trump.”
Meanwhile, the Liberals face a challenging path forward. Without a majority, they may have to partner with a smaller party to govern. The Bloc Québécois, a separatist Quebec party, is projected to finish third, while the New Democratic Party, which supported the Liberals in the last Parliament, performed poorly.
Carney promised counter-tariff funds would support Canadian workers, pledged to maintain dental care, lower taxes for the middle class, and stabilise immigration. He also vowed increased funding for the CBC.
China says ready to improve Canada ties after Carney win
China signalled on Tuesday that it is open to improving relations with Canada following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s election victory and the Liberal Party’s return to power.
“China is willing to develop China-Canada relations on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun. While Beijing stopped short of formally congratulating Carney, Guo added: “China’s position on China-Canada relations is consistent and clear.”
Carney’s win marks a remarkable turnaround for the Liberals, who had appeared headed for defeat earlier this year.
Canada election results 2025: Canada's Conservative leader pledges unity against Trump after election loss
Canada’s Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, conceded defeat on Tuesday following the federal election and pledged to cooperate with the Liberal government in addressing US President Donald Trump’s trade war and annexation threats.
“We will always put Canada first,” Poilievre told supporters in the capital. “Conservatives will work with the prime minister and all parties with the common goal of defending Canada’s interests and getting a new trade deal that puts these tariffs behind us while protecting our sovereignty.”
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), has announced his resignation after losing his seat in Burnaby Central and the party’s collapse in the federal election, CTV News reported. Singh, a vocal pro-Khalistan supporter, placed third in his riding, which was affected by boundary changes. The NDP also lost official party status after failing to win the required 12 seats.
“It’s been the honour of my life to lead the NDP... I know this night is disappointing... but I am hopeful for our Party,” Singh said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberals are projected to retain power following a campaign dominated by US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and attacks on Canada’s sovereignty.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: What Carney said on US-Canada ties
After securing a fourth term for the Liberals, Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a defiant and unifying tone in his victory speech, signaling a firm stance toward the United States and President Donald Trump.
“We have to look out for ourselves. And above all, we have to take care of each other,” Carney told supporters.
Addressing the future of Canada-US relations, Carney made it clear that Canada’s sovereignty would not be compromised. “When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future economic and security relationship between two sovereign nations,” he said. “And it will be with our full knowledge that we have many, many other options than the United States to build prosperity for all Canadians.”
We are at one of the hinge moments of history. Our old relationship with US a relationship based on slowly increasing integration is over. The system of open global trade anchored by the US, a system that Canada has relied on since WW2 is over. We are over the shock of American betrayal but we should not forget the lessons.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Liberals projected to win fourth term in Canada, majority still unclear
The Liberal Party is projected to win a fourth consecutive term in Canada’s federal election, a rare milestone in the country’s modern political history, according to CBC News. While it remains unclear whether the Liberals have secured the 172 seats needed for a majority, the result marks a remarkable turnaround following early struggles in the polls.
CTV News also reported that Prime Minister Mark Carney and his party are expected to retain power after a turbulent campaign. Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau following internal party dissent, led the Liberals through a high-stakes election dominated by tensions with US President Donald Trump. Trump’s threats of tariffs and talk of Canada as the “51st state” raised the stakes significantly.
Carney, a former central banker, framed the election as a response to what he called the greatest crisis of his lifetime. His emphasis on economic resilience and sovereignty resonated with voters nationwide.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Liberals win in Canada — but will they have majority rule?
Voting has concluded in Canada’s parliamentary elections, but ballot counting is still underway, and it remains unclear whether the ruling party will secure a majority.
Mark Carney has retained his seat and will remain prime minister, tasked with forming a new government and appointing a new cabinet.
The key question now is whether the Liberals will win enough seats for an outright majority — or if they will need to rely on support from the NDP and Green Party to govern in a minority Parliament.
Canada Election Results Live: Who did Trump want to win?
One of the key challenges facing Canada’s next prime minister – projected by CBC to be the Liberals' Mark Carney – will be managing relations with U.S. President Donald Trump. So, where does Trump stand on Canada’s election outcome? The president has remained silent since the CBC projected a Liberal victory. However, in an interview with Fox News last month, Trump said, "I would rather deal with a Liberal than a Conservative" and added, "I think it’s easier to deal, actually, with a Liberal." He also insisted he didn’t particularly care who won, as per BBC.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: What some Canadian voters had to say about their election and Donald Trump
Donald Trump’s return to the White House loomed large over Canada’s national election, shaping how many Canadians cast their ballots. In his first 100 days, Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and reignited talk of making Canada the 51st state — rhetoric that fuelled voter anxiety.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals ultimately prevailed over Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, with many crediting Trump’s actions for the dramatic shift in momentum.
In Toronto, voter Reid Warren said Poilievre “sounds like mini-Trump,” and chose the Liberals amid economic uncertainty. Duncan Garrow echoed similar concerns, suggesting Canada might benefit from distancing itself from the US.
However, others disagreed. Sisters Laiqa and Mahira Shoaib, voting in Mississauga, said the economy had declined under the Liberals. “We need change,” they said.
Mark Carney’s rise from central banker to Canada’s prime minister marks a remarkable political transformation. Once known as a calm technocrat brought in during crises, Carney is now on the verge of securing a full mandate to lead the country. Latest results show the Liberals ahead in 158 ridings, with the Conservatives leading in 147.
Having taken over the Liberal leadership only after Justin Trudeau’s resignation, Carney helped steer his party away from what looked like an inevitable Conservative landslide. Although it remains unclear whether the Liberals have achieved a majority, the result represents a dramatic turnaround.
Canada Election Results Live: Liberals lead on 159 seats, Conservatives 148
Liberals are ahead in 158 ridings, while the Conservatives lead in 147. The Bloc Québécois is leading in 25 ridings, the NDP in 10, the Greens in 2, and no seats are currently led by the PPC or other parties. With 52% of polls reporting, the Conservatives have so far secured 114 seats with 53.2% of the popular vote, while the Liberals have won 108 seats with 50.4% support. The Bloc Québécois has claimed 18 seats with 8.4% of the vote, and the NDP has taken 1 seat with 0.5% of the popular vote. The Greens, the People's Party of Canada, and other parties have yet to win any seats. A total of 172 seats are required to form a majority government in the Canadian Parliament.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Canada's Carney: Political newcomer who says he's best in a crisis
Mark Carney, whose Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election on Monday, is no stranger to leadership in turbulent times. “I’m most useful in a crisis,” he remarked during the campaign. Despite never having served in Parliament—a first in Canadian political history—Carney secured the prime ministership by persuading voters that his experience managing global financial crises made him the right person to confront US President Donald Trump’s trade war.
Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Carney, 60, studied at Harvard and Oxford before making his mark in global finance with Goldman Sachs. He later served as governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis, and in 2013, became the first non-Briton to lead the Bank of England, where he helped stabilise markets post-Brexit.
After returning to Canada, Carney entered politics following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. Though viewed as a technocrat lacking flair, his calm authority, particularly when condemning Trump’s policies, struck a chord with voters.
Carney has faced scrutiny over his private sector wealth and tax arrangements, but insists he complies with all ethics rules. “I’ve stood up for Canada,” he declared. “I left the private sector to serve in a time of crisis.”
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Sitting Prime Minister Mark Carney retains his seat in Ottawa
Mark Carney, the first non-Briton to lead the Bank of England since its founding in 1694 and a former governor of Canada’s central bank, entered the race to become Canada’s next prime minister in January following Justin Trudeau’s resignation.
His Liberal Party is projected to win more of the 343 seats in Parliament than the Conservatives. However, it remains uncertain whether the Liberals will secure an outright majority, which would enable them to pass legislation without relying on support from other parties.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Carney's Liberals win Canada election defined by Trump
Prime Minister Mark Carney is projected to lead the Liberal Party to victory in Canada’s federal election, according to CBC and CTV News. While it's still unclear whether the Liberals will secure a parliamentary majority, the win marks a dramatic political turnaround fueled by Carney’s message of economic experience and opposition to US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s threats to annex Canada and ongoing trade hostilities became a central campaign issue, especially after he reignited those threats on election day via social media. Carney, a former central bank governor in both Canada and the UK, used his economic credentials to argue he was best equipped to protect the country.
He pledged to expand trade beyond the US and fiercely warned against American encroachment: “They want our resources, our water, our land—our country. They can’t have it.”
The departure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also played a crucial role. Carney distanced himself from Trudeau, scrapping his unpopular carbon tax and promising stronger economic growth. The campaign transformed after Carney took over, just as Conservative poll leads began to fade amid growing public concern over Trump.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Early results suggest collapse of separatist Bloc Québécois
Early returns from Quebec indicate a sharp decline in support for the separatist Bloc Québécois, a shift that appears to be benefiting the incumbent Liberal Party, the Guardian reported.
Mark Carney’s Liberals are currently outperforming their 2021 federal election showing, which resulted in a minority government. Rising concerns over a potential trade war and US President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada have galvanized support for the Liberals in the predominantly francophone province.
Canada Election Results Live: Mark Carney’s Liberals win election upended by Trump, Canadian media reports
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party secured victory in Canada’s federal election on Monday, completing a remarkable political comeback driven in part by US President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and economic threats.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Liberals are projected to win more seats in the 343-member Parliament than the opposition Conservatives. However, it remains uncertain whether they will secure an outright majority, which would allow them to govern without coalition support.
Just months ago, the Liberals appeared destined for defeat. But public sentiment shifted dramatically after President Trump launched a series of attacks on Canada’s economy and sovereignty, even suggesting the country should be annexed as the 51st US state. The remarks sparked a wave of nationalist backlash, rallying voters around the Liberals and changing the trajectory of the campaign, leading to their fourth consecutive term in power.
Canada Election Results Live: Liberals take early lead with 50.6% as conservatives trail at 38.8%
With 50.6 percent of the vote, the Liberals lead on 91 seats (21 elected outright plus 72 currently leading) and have tallied 566,277 votes. The Conservatives follow closely with 38.8% of the vote, winning 9 seats outright and leading in 59 others (61 total), on 435,165 votes.
Canada Election Results 2025 Live: Canadians vote in an election dominated by Trump's trade war and bluster
On Monday, Canadians headed to the polls to decide whether to give Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party another term or shift power to the Conservatives, led by populist Pierre Poilievre. However, the election unexpectedly became a referendum on US President Donald Trump, who stirred controversy by claiming Canada should be the 51st state and falsely asserting the US subsidizes its northern neighbor. Trump’s remarks provoked backlash across Canada, including a pointed response from Poilievre, who asserted that Canada “will NEVER be the 51st state.”
Initially trailing, the Liberals gained momentum after Trump won re-election and threatened Canada's economy and independence. His inflammatory rhetoric angered Canadians, spurring a record 7.3 million early votes, a boycott of American products, and increased nationalistic sentiment that helped the Liberals regain ground. Carney highlighted the stakes, warning, “The Americans want to break us so they can own us.”
Campaigning paused briefly due to a deadly attack at a Vancouver street fair, later attributed to a mentally ill local man. As voting resumed, Poilievre emphasized change, while voters like sisters Laiqa and Mahira Shoaib shared differing views—one backing the NDP, the other favoring Poilievre for his economic stance.
Poilievre had hoped to center the race on former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s unpopularity and rising costs, but Trump’s interference dominated discourse. Historian Robert Bothwell noted Poilievre’s appeal mirrored Trump’s. With Canada heavily reliant on US trade, Trump’s tariff threats raised serious economic concerns. Both candidates pledged to renegotiate trade agreements to reduce uncertainty.
Canada Election Results: Most Canadian polling now closed
Polls have now closed in Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and parts of British Columbia.
Voting is concluding simultaneously across many regions in Eastern, Central, and Mountain Time zones, including Saskatchewan, all closing at 9.30pm EDT.
This includes Ontario and Quebec, the country’s two most populous provinces.
Canada Election Results Live: Canadians aren’t directly electing their prime minister
In Canada’s 343 federal ridings, voters elect only their local MP to the House of Commons. The leader of the party winning a majority of seats becomes prime minister and forms the government. If no party wins a majority, the party with the most seats may form a minority government, needing support from opposition MPs. Occasionally, parties may form a coalition government through a formal agreement, though this is rare in Canadian federal politics.
Canada Election Results: Conservatives score early lead in Long Range Mountains
The Conservatives have reason to celebrate as CBC projects a win for them in Newfoundland’s Long Range Mountains riding, previously held by the Liberals.
If similar gains occur elsewhere, it could signal that the Conservatives are outperforming expectations and defying the polls. However, it's still early in the night, with voting ongoing across central and western Canada.
As Canadians voted in a high-stakes election overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's provocations, many asked a simple question: Why Monday?
While Canadians lined up to decide whether to back new Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberals or swing right to Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, Trump stirred controversy from afar, suggesting Canada should just become the "51st state" — even claiming the US subsidizes its northern neighbor. His outburst sent shockwaves through a tense election already defined by fears of economic conflict and political annexation.
While millions of Canadians cast their ballots today, US President Donald Trump inserted himself into the mix with a jaw-dropping offer. He said Canada could have "zero tariffs" and "free access with no border" — if it would become "the beloved 51st state."
In a flurry of social media posts, Trump asserted that the US could no longer continue to "subsidize Canada with hundreds of billions of dollars a year" unless it officially becomes part of the United States.
Canada Election Results Live: Liberals keep early lead in election race
CBC’s decision desk has projected results in five more ridings, with the Liberals retaining Avalon, Acadie–Bathurst, Cape Spear, and Beauséjour, while the Conservatives have held onto Central Newfoundland.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Liberals secured six districts compared to just one for the Conservatives. Nova Scotia saw the Liberals take eight seats while the Conservatives claimed three. In New Brunswick, the race was tighter, with the Liberals winning six ridings to the Conservatives’ four.
No other party secured any seats in these provinces in the last election.

Canada Elections Results 2025: Canadians choose their leader in what’s become a referendum on Trump
Canadians decide Monday if new Prime Minister Mark Carney will extend the Liberal Party’s decade in power or pick the opposition Conservatives' populist leader Pierre Poilievre to lead the country. The Liberals looked headed for defeat after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down earlier this year amid rising food and housing prices and soaring immigration. But U.S. President Donald Trump began threatening Canada’s economy and sovereignty, infuriating Canadians and generating a surge in nationalism that boosted the Liberals' chances. The winner will face a cost-of-living crisis and Trump's threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canada, which sends more than 75% of its exports to the U.S. A record 7.3 million Canadians cast ballots before election day.
