The Gaudreau family has been hosting a mourning period following that grievous accident that claimed their son, NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, with brotherly ties to Matthew. They were cycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey when Sean Higgins hit them—the legal level of alcohol within the system. But instead of taking full responsibility, Higgins has presented some shocking defenses on his own behalf. Meanwhile, as the trial progresses, fresh revelations have fueled the controversy, yet the fight for justice continues.
Sean Higgins Blame Game Will Not Alter the Reality
It has taken a twisted turn where the accused driver, Sean Higgins, is trying to put the blame back onto Johnny Gaudreau and his brother. The court documents show that Higgins had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.087%, which is just above the legal limit. However, now he claims the BAC of the Gaudreau brothers should be accounted for as they were intoxicated as well. Reports confirm that Johnny Gaudreau had a BAC of 0.129%. His brother's was 0.134%.
Nonetheless, those are the numbers, and attorney experts point out that under New Jersey law bicycles are not vehicles. Thus, the Gaudreau brothers were not in violation of DUI laws, invalidating any of Higgins' possible defenses. The public's rage evoked because of his refusal of accountability demands swift justice.
In addition to everything, Johnny and Matthew were riding over to celebrate a significant family event— their sister's wedding, just days after the unfortunate event. Such joy, once expected, has turned into an unbearable nightmare. Even worse was learned afterward: Madeline was pregnant with their first child at the time of his father's untimely death. Late last year, this child was born but will never know his father.
Soothing Devastation and the Fight for Justice
It is made all the more gloomy by an interminably dragging trial that keeps serving reminders of their loss. The State has everything against Higgins even as he answers a charge of not guilty. His efforts to justify his reckless actions by putting the blame on the victims have not endeared him to the public who remained strong in favor of justice for the Gaudreaus.
