Oscar Piastri is gearing up for a significant weekend as he prepares for the F1 2025 season opener at Albert Park. The McLaren driver, already considered one of the favorites for victory, has not only impressed with his performance in pre-season testing but has also taken on an unexpected yet exciting new role. Piastri has recorded public service announcements for Melbourne’s tram system, adding a personal touch to the city’s preparations for the much-anticipated event.
Oscar Piastri Becomes Melbourne Tram Voice Before Australian GP
McLaren's MCL39 car has shown remarkable speed and reliability during pre-season testing, boosting Piastri’s chances of securing a strong result at his home race. McLaren is riding high after clinching their first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years last season. However, the team is still chasing their first Drivers’ Championship since Lewis Hamilton’s triumph in 2008. Adding to the excitement, reigning World Champion Max Verstappen has downplayed his chances of victory in Melbourne, which could pave the way for Piastri to capitalize on the opportunity.
Piastri, who secured victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan last season, will be making his third appearance at Albert Park. He showed steady progress in his previous home races, finishing eighth in 2023 and improving to fourth in 2024. Now, with a competitive car and growing confidence, the Melbourne-born star has a real shot at a podium finish.
In the buildup to the race, Piastri has added a personal touch to Melbourne’s transport system by recording tram announcements. A video posted on the Australian Grand Prix’s official Instagram account shows the 23-year-old making the recordings during a gym session. Piastri’s message to passengers reflects his excitement: “Hello passengers! It’s Oscar Piastri. There’s nothing quite like the roar of the crowd at Melbourne’s Albert Park and I can’t wait to see you at the Australian Grand Prix this year.”
Race organizers have made travel more convenient for fans by adding 4,800 extra tram services over the race weekend, with free tram rides included with every ticket. Piastri is one of two Australian drivers on the F1 2025 grid, alongside Jack Doohan of Alpine. Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo will miss the Australian Grand Prix for the second time in three years after losing his Racing Bulls seat last season.
