Why does the Moon appear red when there is a Lunar Eclipse

The reason why the Moon appears red when there is a total lunar eclipse is that the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon and casts a shadow on the Moon. The red hue, often referred to as a "Blood Moon," is caused by Earth's atmosphere scattering the blue and green shorter wavelengths of light so that only orange and red longer wavelengths will reach the Moon. This reddens the Moon coppery or deep red throughout the course of the eclipse.

How to watch the lunar eclipse

If you're in an area where the eclipse can be seen, these are some tips so that you get the best viewing experience:

  • Bring a telescope or binoculars: These devices will enable you to spot more details of the Moon's surface.
  • Know the timing: Make sure to go outside at the right time to get the best view.
