Ben Affleck is finally getting candid about one of the toughest parts of stepping into the iconic role of Batman and it’s not the intense action sequences or the emotional depth of the character.
In a recent sit-down with GQ, the Academy Award-winning actor revealed that his biggest struggle while playing the Dark Knight had nothing to do with the complexities of the role—it was the suit that turned his experience into a sweaty nightmare.
Affleck, who portrayed Bruce Wayne/Batman in several DC films including Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Justice League (2017), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) and most recently in The Flash (2023), spoke openly about the discomfort he endured behind the scenes. “I absolutely hated the Batsuits,” Affleck confessed. “They’re awful to wear, hot, suffocating and definitely not designed with the actor’s comfort in mind.” According to him the materials were more about visual impact than practicality, leaving little room for breathability or ease.
The actor admitted that even though he enjoyed filming Batman v. Superman, the sheer physical discomfort of wearing the suit often made scenes more difficult. “It’s like being wrapped in heat,” he said, “and I’m someone who already sweats easily. Put me in that thing and I’m drenched.”
He humorously described having to act composed while internally battling fatigue. “You don’t feel heroic at all. You’re constantly fighting the exhaustion, trying to keep your face from melting and act like you’re ready to jump into another take,” Affleck joked.
He even thought aloud how other Batman actors managed to shoot in their suits. “Maybe Christian Bale or Robert Pattinson are just better at handling it,” he quipped.
Before playing the role of Batman, Affleck played another superhero - Marvel's Daredevil, in the 2002 film that also starred Jennifer Garner.
