PUDUKOTTAI: The crime branch-CID has taken over the investigation into the murder of Jagabar Ali from the district police.
Following a recommendation by the Pudukottai police, the director general of police (DGP) issued an order entrusting the CB-CID with the case for a more detailed investigation, police said Thursday.
All documents related to the murder case will be handed over to the CB-CID.
Ali, who had been actively campaigning and filing petitions against quarry irregularities, died on Jan 17 after being deliberately run over by a tipper lorry as he was returning home from a nearby mosque.
Ali’s death, initially classified as an accident, was later altered as a murder case after a complaint by his wife, Mariyam, and a subsequent detailed police investigation on Monday. It was revealed that Ali’s death was a case of premeditated murder and four individuals, including a quarry owner R Rasu, 54, were arrested and remanded in judicial custody until Feb 3. The other accused were identified as R Dinesh Kumar, 25, S Muruganandhan, 56, and Kasinathan, 45.
As part of the probe, the Pudukottai revenue and mines & geology departments conducted extensive drone surveys, total station inspections, and measurements on Tuesday and Wednesday in the quarries where activist Jagabar Ali had raised allegations.
