Trichy: Trichy corporation is planning to relocate the bronze statue of late actor Sivaji Ganesan to Williams Road in Cantonment as the Palakkarai roundabout that presently accommodates the statue is likely to undergo renovation to streamline the traffic.
The nine-foot-tall statue was installed in 2011 through crowdfunding, but it was not unveiled. Initially, the conduct of the 2011 state assembly election was cited as a reason to defer the opening, but legal reasons were cited later to keep the statue concealed.
Recently, Trichy corporation has decided to relocate the Sivaji statue to the Warners Road – Williams Road junction near the Sona Mina theatre. A traffic island furnished with a water fountain is being prepared to accommodate the actor's statue. The local body is likely to pass a resolution in the council to unveil the actor's statue by the next month.
Williams Road has been chosen for the statue as the road is managed by the corporation and handles comparatively less volume of vehicular movement compared to the Palakkarai roundabout. "We are glad that Actor Sivaji Ganesan's statue is finally set to be unveiled," said L Rex, president, Congress urban district unit said.
