COIMBATORE: A 24-year-old youth attempted to murder his lover at her workplace in a private hospital in Coimbatore city on Sunday evening.
The woman sustained a minor injury to her fingers, and the private hospital’s security guard caught the youth red-handed and handed him over to Race Course police in the city.
The arrested youth was identified as A Sujith, 24, from Amman Kovil Second Street in Nagercoil. He was a wall painter.
Police said he was in love with a 22-year-old woman who hailed from Kesavanpudur near Azhakiyapandiyapuram in Kanyakumari district for the last four years. The woman completed an undergraduate nursing course and was working at a private hospital in Coimbatore city.
She allegedly avoided him for more than a week and did not respond to his phone calls. He became wild and travelled to Coimbatore city from Nagercoil on Sunday morning. He reached the hospital around 5 pm on Sunday and met his lover in front of the staff nurse hostel at the private hospital premises.
He argued with her for not speaking with him and suddenly took out a knife from his pocket and tried to attack her. When the girl blocked his hand, the knife inflicted injuries on her fingers, and she raised an alarm. Private security guards at the hospital rushed towards her and caught the youth red-handed.
They alerted Race Course police inspector Arjun Kumar, who rushed to the spot along with his team. The youth was handed over to the police, who registered a case and arrested him and seized the weapon from him on Sunday night. The youth was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Coimbatore central prison on Monday afternoon.
