NEW DELHI: With heavy rains lashing Chennai, many car owners have opted to park their vehicles on flyovers to protect them from potential flooding.
The
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, southern interior Karnataka, and Kerala starting today.
In the low-lying Velachery area, residents hurriedly parked their cars on the Pallikaranai flyover.
Since Monday night, Chennai and its surrounding suburbs, including parts of the nearby Tiruvallur district, have been experiencing intermittent rainfall.
The IMD reported on 'X' that a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal persisted as of 11.30pm IST on October 14. It is expected to move west-northwest and develop into a well-marked low-pressure area over central south Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 15.
Following that, it may intensify into a depression and continue its west-northwestward trajectory towards the northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next two days.
In preparation, Greater Chennai Corporation officials held a review meeting and announced that 990 pumps, 57 tractors equipped with pump sets, and 36 mechanized boats are ready for emergencies. Additionally, 46 metric tons of bleaching powder and phenyl are available for sanitation purposes, with 169 fully equipped relief centers ready to operate based on the evolving situation.
