Academy Award-winning actors,
Sean Penn and
Julia Roberts spilled the beans about their upcoming series 'Gaslit'.
The political thriller directed by
Matt Ross is a modern-day take on the controversial Watergate scandal. It features a stellar cast, including
Dan Stevens, Betty Gilpin and Shea Wigham, amongst others.
'Gaslit' revolves around some of the unheard voices that spoke out about the Watergate scandal.
Among them, the loudest was Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts. She was the wife of President Nixon’s loyal Attorney General, John N. Mitchell played by Sean Penn.
She was infamous for her honest, unfiltered press interviews and for being the first one to publicly expose Nixon’s involvement in Watergate. This act of bravery puts her in danger, and her husband in the tough place of having to choose between his wife and his president.
Penn, who portrays John in the series said in an exclusive statement to ETimes, "I think it is always a balancing act to show all sides to a person."
Roberts, on the other hand, shared her exploration of the multifaceted Martha. "She was so known for being loud and boisterous but Matt Ross and I spent a lot of time discussing her 'off-camera' personality. What she was like at home alone, and what she and John were like at home. I spent a lot of time researching Martha. There is a lot of great film of her and it shows her personality. It was extremely important for me to find out what she was like in private. I also read her biography which was wildly helpful," the actress said.
Written by Sam Esmail, Robbie Pickering, Leon Neyfakh, 'Gaslit' will stream on Lionsgate Play from 25th April 2022
