Exclusive - Papia Sengupta on her role in Jamai No.1: Kanchan isn’t just negative for the sake of being negative
Veteran actress Papia Sengupta, who essays the cunning and layered role of Kanchan Chotwani in the ongoing show Jamai No. 1, opens up about portraying a character with dual shades and the excitement of playing a villain. As the show continues to grip audiences with its rollercoaster of twists — including Neel being unknowingly drugged in a sinister plan — all eyes are on Kanchan Chotwani, the scheming matriarch pulling the strings from the shadows.
The actress says she relishes the challenge of playing such a complex character. “Kanchan isn’t just negative for the sake of being negative. She’s smart, composed, and has her reasons — no matter how twisted they may be. What I love about her is that she’s not one-dimensional. She’s warm and sweet when she wants to be, but behind closed doors, she is calculated and cold. That kind of duality is such a treat for any actor.”
In the current storyline, Kanchan’s plans are becoming increasingly dangerous, with her attempts to control Neel reaching a peak. The scenes require emotional intensity and a certain level of darkness — something Papia prepares for, but doesn’t let consume her. “It’s important for me to disconnect once the camera stops rolling,” she says. “These roles can be emotionally taxing if you carry them home. So after a heavy shoot, I make it a point to unwind.
I listen to music — old retro classics or soft instrumental tunes — or I’ll go for a walk. I love being in nature; it grounds me. Sometimes, just sipping a cup of chai while watching the sunset is all I need to reset.”
Despite playing a character viewers love to hate, Papia says she receives a lot of appreciation from fans. "People come up to me and say, ‘We can’t believe someone so sweet-looking could be so evil on screen!’” she laughs. “I take it as a compliment. If audiences are reacting, it means the character is leaving an impact.”
Working on the show also gives her a chance to collaborate with a dynamic team of actors. “The energy on set is amazing. Everyone is so committed to their characters, which helps me bring out the best in my performance as well. We support each other, especially during emotionally intense scenes.”
As the story continues to unravel, Kanchan’s true motives remain hidden, and Papia hints that more unexpected twists are on the way. “Kanchan still has many cards up her sleeve. Viewers should be ready for some shocking turns. Let’s just say — the game has only just begun.”
