Tommy Fury speaks out about break-up with Molly-Mae Hague and his struggle with alcohol: "2024 was the worst year of my life"
In an open interview with Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, May 7, boxer Tommy Fury looked back at the personal issues he's experienced in the last year, including his very public split from long-term partner and fiancée Molly-Mae Hague. Now 26, Fury is gearing up to make his ring return on May 9, hoping that 2025 will bring a fresh start after what he describes as the darkest period in his life. The pair, who became well-known after they met and fell in love on Love Island UK Season 5 in 2019, won over the hearts of the nation with their seemingly flawless relationship. They became housemates within a matter of months after the show, daughter Bambi arrived in January 2023, and were engaged soon after. But behind the glamour, Fury was not alright."Being in a situation where boxing is life, the fact that I couldn't do that — I couldn't get out of bed in the morning and do what I wanted to do and live and do what made me happy — I just thought, you know, s— it all," he said during the tearful moment. "Then you go down that dark path, and you go down there for a few weeks, and you end up there for a very long time. And that, you know, it has repercussions.
It has repercussions on everything absolutely."Fury revealed that a serious injury that bench-warmed him for boxing directed him to alcohol addiction, and the latter partly brought about his deterioration of relation with Hague. "We parted because I was alcoholic and could no longer be the partner that I wanted to be," he declared in his previous interview on Men's Health UK. "It kills me saying it, but I could not."In spite of public gossip about their split — such as unsubstantiated allegations of cheating — Fury has categorically denied cheating on Dele Alli. "Cheating was never a thing," he insisted. "It's utter bulls—Hague, 24, broke up with him on Instagram in August 2024, reaffirming her ongoing love for their daughter. "I will always be thankful for the most precious thing to me now and forever, my gorgeous daughter. Without us there would be no her, she will always come first to me," she stated.Fury echoed the same sentiments on Good Morning Britain, giving a warm shoutout to his 2-year-old daughter. "I talk to Bambi all the time. She's everything to me, I love her so much. If Bambi is watching this, Bambi, daddy loves you!"While the couple has not made an official statement regarding rumors of a reconciliation, rumors of a potential reunion persist. When questioned about his mental state at present, Fury stated, "I'm happy mentally now. I've got to go through these challenges in life. Everyone's got a hard life. I've come through this, I'm on the other side and I'm back doing what I do best."With his return to boxing just around the corner, Fury is determined to put the pain of 2024 behind him. “2024 was the worst year of my life, and this year is going to be the best year of my life. It starts on Friday, I’ve turned it all around.”Whether love rekindles between Hague and Fury, one thing is for sure — the boxer is returning to the ring not only to fight other fighters, but to reclaim his purpose, identity, and peace.
