Delhi Elections 2025 Live Updates: Congress announces separate ministry, budget for Poorvanchalis in Delhi if voted to power

Delhi Elections 2025 Live Updates: AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, while addressing a 'Jansabha' in East Delhi's Trilokpuri, urged the public to cast their votes "mindfully" in the upcoming assembly elections on February 5. He warned voters not to press the "wrong button," referring to the BJP's lotus symbol and alleged that if the saffron party comes to power, all free facilities they enjoy now would be discontinued.

Kejriwal claimed that if the BJP wins the election, the people of Delhi would "land in trouble" and appealed to the public to choose the Aam Aadmi Party to "secure the future of their children."

"If you press the wrong button, your children's future will be ruined. When they grow up, they will blame you for voting for the wrong party," he said.

Kejriwal paused his speech midway as the 'azaan' (call to prayer) was heard.

Beginning again, he said, "AAP provides 24X7 electricity in Delhi, while the BJP has failed to provide such facilities in the states it governs. Don't press the wrong button on February 5, or by the time you reach home, the electricity will be gone."

Delhi Elections Live Updares: Central, city governments never cared about Delhi, says Congress' Sachin Pilot

Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Friday alleged that neither the central nor the city government cared about Delhi during the past 10 years. People of every caste, society and religion have faith in the Congress' 'hand' election symbol, he added.
During a rally in west Delhi's Madipur area, Pilot said the people of Delhi had voted for the BJP and AAP multiple times in the past 10-11 years.

"For the past 10 years, since the Congress is not here, we have seen both parties saying something in their speeches and giving assurances while, in reality, they were fighting for supremacy. They spent the entire time making allegations and counter-allegations," Pilot said.

"Apart from humiliating each other, neither the central government nor the city government cared about the national capital," he alleged.

Beniwal, a Jat leader from Rajasthan, said the RLP is backing the AAP because Kejriwal’s party is advocating for reservation for Jats in Delhi. “The AAP is going to win as many as 60 seats in Delhi as all the poor are going to vote for it,” he said. He added that people are frustrated with both the BJP and Congress and are seeking a third alternative.

I want to ask, in the history of the country, has there ever been someone with Z-plus security whose car was attacked with stones, and the police did not intervene?... Kejriwal gives a statement on everything but he has nothing to say on this. We think the period of COVID-19 pandemic was a period of opportunities for Arvind Kejriwal. Today in Delhi, children are having trouble breathing and the elderly are unable to walk, this is the appalling condition of Delhi."

11:37 (IST) Jan 24

"The truth is that neither River Ganga nor River Yamuna was cleaned. A lot of politics was done in the name of both. Corruption worth crores of rupees happened in the name of cleaning both rivers. BJP and AAP governments have been in power for a decade, but we have never seen both of them sitting together at a table and rising above politics and finding a solution. Rivers Yamuna and Ganga are nothing more than election issues for them...If people give us a chance, we will show our work (Yamuna cleaning), we will not blame the people of Purvanchal for the condition of Yamuna like Arvind Kejriwal did...

People aged above 85 years and those with disabilities, who have opted for the home voting facility, will be able to cast their votes through postal ballots from Friday. The district election offices have finalised the schedule for collecting postal ballots in assembly constituencies under their jurisdiction and will complete the exercise in the next three-four days. Of nearly 1.84 lakh — about 1.06 lakh aged above 85 years and approximately 77,000 who have disabilities — voters who were eligible to cast votes from home, only 7,449 — 6,399 senior citizens and 1,050 PwDs — filled up the requisite form 12D and submitted it to the respective booth level officers.

“Our teams, including poll officials from the respective districts and booth-level officers, will start visiting the houses of people who have opted for the facility from Friday as per the pre-decided schedule. Candidates have also been informed about the exercise, if they wish to depute their representative to watch the process for transparency,” said a senior election official. “Each district will run the exercise to collect postal ballots for three days,” he added. Another official said voting would take place in complete secrecy. A videographer will also accompany each team to capture the exercise while a police personnel will provide the security cover.

According to EC, the provision of home voting is a progressive measure aimed at empowering voters who encounter barriers to participating in the electoral process at the polling stations. Officials said ballot papers were sent for printing immediately after the nomination process was over. Voters are being informed in advance through text messages and by BLOs of the date when the election team will visit their home. The postal ballots will be kept in sealed boxes. They will be counted on Feb 8 before the counting of EVM votes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 5,472 eligible voters filled up the form to cast votes from their respective homes.

Alleging that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal committed the “crime” of converting the Yamuna into “a dirty drain”, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday challenged him to take a dip in the river’s water.

Yogi said: “Yesterday, I, along with all my ministers, took a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj where the Maha Kumbh is on. I want to ask Kejriwal whether he, along with his minister, can bathe in the Yamuna in Delhi. He should answer if he has any moral courage.”

“For the current Delhi govt, the Yamuna was never a priority. Arvind Kejriwal is responsible for the deterioration of the sacred river,” he added.

Yogi spoke at public gatherings in Kirari, Karol Bagh and Janakpuri.

The UP CM further alleged that AAP govt was helping illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingya take refuge in the capital and also accused the party of instigating northeast Delhi riots.

“With the help of Bangladeshi infiltrators, their (AAP) councillors and officials together instigated riots in 2020. They created chaos and hooliganism in Shaheen Bagh,” Yogi said.

On illegal immigration, he alleged, “In the areas around Jamia Millia Islamia, AAP officials have helped Bangladeshi illegal immigrants settle in Okhla. As the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, I sent bulldozers to clear the land of these infiltrators. There is zero tolerance for illegal immigrants in UP.”

Yogi also accused AAP of turning Delhi into a “garbage dump” and neglecting essential services. “Delhi’s Okhla industrial area is in a shambles,” he said. “While AAP hindered industrial growth, they facilitated the settlement of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators. In contrast, Uttar Pradesh’s New Okhla region (Noida) is a prime example of development.”

On EC order, Punjab cops pulled from Kejriwal cover

Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav Thursday announced withdrawal of his men from the security of former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who is a Z+ category protectee, following a directive from Election Commission and objections raised by Delhi Police. AAP has described it as a “conspiracy” by BJP.

In Patiala, DGP Yadav said they would continue to share intelligence regarding threats to Kejriwal with the Delhi authorities. “We expressed our concern, and we will continue to share inputs …We keep getting reports of threats to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the former Delhi CM and we share these with the agencies concerned,” Yadav said.

Around 60 people are assigned to guard the former CM. Besides 16 Central Armed Police Force personnel, there are pilots, escorts, a close protection team, home guards, spotters and search-and-frisking staff. This set-up is according to the “yellow book”, said sources.

Know your constituency: Gandhi Nagar

Know your constituency: Gandhi Nagar

AAP MLA, Anil Kumar Bajpai was the winner of 2020 assembly election from Gandhi Nagar. In the Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency in east Delhi people are exasperated. A drive through the streets of the largest garment manufacturing hub in Asia, generating over Rs 100 crore every single day, shows the need for major civic improvements. The pungent smell from overflowing sewers and stagnant water makes one wonder how the businessmen cope with this daily alongside other woes like damaged roads, dysfunctional sewers, congested streets, limited parking space and inadequate civic facilities.

AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that if re-elected, his govt would work on generating job opportunities and would eliminate unemployment from Delhi in the next five years. The former Delhi CM claimed that AAP govt managed to create 12 lakh job opportunities during the Covid pandemic.

“My top priority will be to provide employment to our youths. Our team is drafting a detailed plan to address the issue of unemployment,” Kejriwal said in a video message. “We have the capability to fix this issue. All we need is your trust and your support,” he added.

Highlighting his party’s track record, Kejriwal claimed that the AAP dispensation in Punjab provided 48,000 govt jobs in less than two years and facilitated over three lakh private-sector jobs for youths. “We know how to create emp loyment and our intentions are honest. With people’s support, we will eliminate unemployment from Delhi in the next five years,” he asserted.

The polling in Delhi as sembly elections is scheduled for Feb 5, with results to be declared on Feb 8. AAP is in pursuit of a third consecutive term in the city, but it faces a tight contest from BJP. The former Delhi CM said he travelled across Delhi for election campaigning and found that despite being educated, the youth was sitting at home, searching for jobs. He added that his team working on the issue of job creation was “highly educated, committed, and patriotic”.

Questioning the announcement, a senior Congress functionary said AAP and its leaders could not be trusted on the issue of providing employment. He alleged that AAP govt came out with the Rozgar Budget in 2022 and promised 20 lakh jobs in the next five years through different projects, but not one came to fruition.

“People should ask Kejriwal what happened to the announcement of the redevelopment of popular retail markets, Dilli shopping festival, food truck policy, cloud kitchens, redevelopment of food hubs, and redevelopment of non-conforming notified industrial areas, through which he claimed that jobs will be generated,” the Congress functionary added.

“You will not hear him talk about the promises of setting up an electronic city, developing Dilli Bazaar portal and Rozgar Bazaar portal, because his govt never made any effort to develop them and the plans only remained on paper,” he said.

AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal at a public meeting in Hari Nagar on Thursday ridiculed Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s govt on power cuts in the neighbouring state and warned voters that BJP has announced it would end free education and healthcare in Delhi if it wins.

“Yogi Adityanath has come to Delhi, he is welcome. We are in power for the last 10 years in Delhi. Soon after coming to power, we provided 24x7 electricity. It has been 10 years too since BJP has been ruling Uttar Pradesh. It is a ‘double-engine’ govt. I want to ask Yogi Adityanath how many hours of power cuts are there in Uttar Pradesh. I have heard there are 10-hour-long power cuts across UP, 6-hour-long in Noida and Lucknow,” Kejriwal told the crowd.

He said that BJP has govts in 20 states across the country, and “nowhere are they providing 24x7 electricity. It is only so in Delhi in the entire country. So, be careful. 200 units in Delhi cost zero. In UP, if you use 200 units, the bill is Rs 2,000. If you mistakenly press the ‘kamal’ (BJP) button on voting day, then the 24-hour electricity supply will stop. UP people pressed the wrong button."

The public meeting, at the busy Shaheed Pawan Sahni Chowk, caused traffic disruption.

AAP has fielded Surinder Setia from the constituency, which has a significant Punjabi population. BJP has given the ticket to Shyam Sharma, and Prem Sharma is the Congress candidate.

“If you vote BJP, then you will have to pay Rs 4,000-5,000 for electricity each month, which I am saving you from right now. Do you want to continue getting zero electricity bills or not?” Kejriwal questioned, and the public responded with a loud “yes”.

Kejriwal also talked about Delhi govt’s schools. “Schools in Uttar Pradesh are in very poor condition,” he said. The former chief minister also said that he was hearing about problems faced by people due to choked drains and high water bills and said that all this would be resolved after AAP returns to power.

“I do not know what conspiracy has been done between BJP and LG. People are getting highly inflated bills. Whoever is getting such bills, do not pay them. After the elections, your brother Kejriwal will write off all those bills,” he said.

Modi, Kejriwal two sides of the same coin: Owaisi in Okhla

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday criticised both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, stating they were "two sides of the same coin" and shared the same RSS ideology. While campaigning for Shifa-ur-Rehman, his party's candidate in Okhla, Owaisi said Kejriwal and Modi were similar, with one emerging from the RSS 'shakha' and the other from its institutions. Owaisi also held a walk in Shaheen Bagh, urging people to vote for the "kite," AIMIM’s symbol, in the upcoming Delhi elections.

Owaisi highlighted that two of his party’s candidates, Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad and Shifa-ur-Rehman from Okhla, are currently jailed in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.
