She was 15 years old when Hema Malini was considered for a Tamil film. But her figure, considered 'too thin' by the director worked against her. She then moved on to make a special appearance for one of the dance numbers in another Telugu film. Later, B.Anathaswami, a film producer offered the young girl a role opposite superstar Raj Kapoor in his venture Sapnon Ka Saudagar (1968).
And from her very first role, the actress was positioned as the dream girl of the Hindi cinema industry. And thus began the journey of one of the most beautiful stars of Bollywood.
At the launch of the film, ace lensman Shyam Aurangabadkar captured the young debutant and the superstar dressed as
Raj Kumar and Mahi (their onscreen characters) with director Mahesh Kaul. The film also starred Tanuja, Achala Sachdev, David, Durga Khote and Nadira.
Raj Kapoor, at the peak of his career looked comfortable even in his 'hawaldar' shorts, socks till his knees and feathered hat. This reminds one of the fun Chaplinesque roles that Kapoor was so famous for.
Hema, on the other hand looks a little reserved. Dressed in the quintessential village belle wardrobe, as a newcomer paired with a superstar, she looks a little happy and perhaps a little sceptical as well. Little did she know, that a few years later, she would become the most sought after heroine in Bollywood.
Hema slowly, but surely became a star. And it was not just her fans who were crazy for their dream girl. Popular Bollywood actors Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra went as far as proposing the lady marriage. Hema, however, fell in love with her Sholay co-star - the much married Dharmendra. Since the actor was already married, both embraced Islam. The two lovers eventually married in 1980.
The dream girl led a rather dreamy life since then - bringing up her two daughters by herself and setting an example for generations to come.
