Grow Jasmine at home

Buy a new pot

To make sure that the plant grows well, first get a new pot, preferably terracotta or clay, and then make two holes at the bottom for drainage. Make sure the pot or the container you choose is atleast 12 inches deep as the roots spread wide.

Soil needs

Once the pot is set, it is time to mix the perfect soil together. Jasmine needs a mix of garden soil. Cocopeat, and organic compost. Along with that, it would be good to add some neem cakes once every 3-5 months.

Position of the plant

Once the pot is filled with soil, it is time to decide the space in which the plant will grow. Place it in a spot where the plant and flower will get about 4 hours of sunlight without fail. And indirect sunlight for about an hour or two.

Add the seeds or cutting

Now, it is completely upto the grower if they want to add seeds of the plant in the soil or grow it with a cutting from a healthy plant. To make things easy, take 2-3 healthy cuttings from a Jasmine plant and cut it from the node to encourage quick growth.

How much water does it need?

There isn’t a specific amount of water that the plant needs everyday. During peak summers, the soil will dry up in about 6 hours and so it is alright to water it twice a day if the topsoil feels dry. But as winters are coming up, try to water it once every two days to avoid root rot.

Node growth and climbing

When Jasmine is grown in hanging pots or containers, they will need some form of support. So, insert some bamboo sticks or wooden twigs into the soil, and trail the plant all around it. But, only do it when flower growth starts or you will damage and weaken the stems.

Pruning for more flowers

Another tip to keep in mind is that the more you prune the flowers and leaves, the better growth you will see. Often, the plant is not able to push out more flowers because the leaves are taking up all the nutrients. So, prune regularly, about once every month.

Repot it when needed

If the flowers have started blooming but you feel that there aren’t as many blooms as last time, it might be repot time. Slightly dry out the soil and with a small spade loosen it from the pot. Then add it to a new pot with fresh soil and compost.

The right way to pluck the flowers

If you want to pluck the flower from the plant, once the plant starts blooming the flower buds, pinch off just from the end of the stem and also remove a few leaves from here and there. But, make sure to never damage the node in the process.
