The many Hughs, Toms and Jennifers of Hollywood

How often do you find yourself trying hard not to get confused between similar-named actors while flipping through Hollywood news? Unlike back home, where there is only one Salman, Shah Rukh, Katrina, Sonakshi, the LA-based film industry is crowded with actors who share similar first names.
The number is such that even with the kind of popularity that Hollywood films have in India, many of us are or have been confused about the actors’ names. Here’s a deconstruction of which Hugh is which and how Kate Hudson is different from Kate Mara.

The Kates include an Oscar winner, a romcom regular, a reel vampire and one who has featured in the acclaimed TV series House of Cards. Starting with Kate Winslet, who has time and again delivered powerful performances after shooting to fame with Titanic, the list includes Almost Famous’ Kate Hudson, Underworld’sKate Beckinsale and Kate Mara who played the journalist Zoe Barnes in House of Cards.

The immediate recollection itself gives a list of six Jennifers. There’s Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence and Friends’ beauty Jennifer Aniston followed by Jennifer Garner, who is in the news for her split from Ben Affleck. Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez is another popular one on the list apart from Criminal Minds’ Jennifer Love Hewitt, Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter and Blood Diamond star Jennifer Connelly.

Yes, the first name that strikes you when you hear the word Hugh (pronounced ‘h ew’), is that of Hugh Jackman, courtesy his shiny Wolverine claws. Think a little more and you will strike the British Hugh Grant, a romcom regular. The last two owe their popularity to television though; Hugh Laurie as the arrogant, stubborn medical genius Gregory House and Hugh Dancy as the psychological profiler Will Graham from Hannibal. It is probably one of the most common names that exist, which is why it isn’t difficult to find actors named Chris. Two of them, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans are regulars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the former playing Thor and the latter Captain America in individual films as well as together in the Avengers franchise.
