Meet Sridevi's sister, Srilatha: From unbreakable bond to filing lawsuit in the court; what caused a rift?
Sridevi, the legendary actress who ruled the hearts, was one of the beloved artists who worked majorly in Bollywood and Tollywood but gained the affection of fans from the entire country. Her unmatched grace and versatility are often spoken of, and she left a massive void after her shocking death.

The tale of Sridevi and Srilatha

The actress has achieved success after working in more than 300 films throughout her cinematic career. While many might know about her ambitions or marital life, her bond with her sister, Srilatha, has been under the shadow. While the sisters were growing up, they shared an unbreakable bond with love laced in their relationship. However, they drifted apart after a tragic loss that couldn’t bind them together.
Sridevi, the superstar, gained an insurmountable amount of love from the audience and fame that knocked constantly on her door. When she kick-started her career in the 1970s, Srilatha accompanied her on the sets. Later, she was spotted at the award shows and entertainment industry events as well, ensuring the actress never felt alone.
Srilatha allegedly wanted to enter the film industry; however, due to unknown reasons, the dream was never fulfilled and instead became her sister’s manager. The rift between the sisters came as a shockwave in the industry, considering famed actor Rishi Kapoor attended Srilatha’s grand wedding in Chennai, according to English Mathrubhumi.

Why did the differences emerge?

According to the reports, the sisters split up after their mother’s demise. While their mother was hospitalised in 1996, the operation was inaccurate, allegedly due to the doctor’s fault, causing her memory to deteriorate, and eventually, her death. Sridevi, being furious, sued the hospital for a wrongful operation. She won the lawsuit and gained ₹7.2 crore as compensation, which she kept to herself, according to the reports.
Furthermore, Sridevi transferred their mother’s property into her name, which fueled rage in Srilatha. To gain her share, Srilatha sued her sister, claiming that their mother was not of sound state of mind to sign the transferring documents. Srilatha received ₹2 crore as her share, further adding a bitter taste to the relationship.
While Sridevi’s husband, Boney Kapoor, tried to mend things between the sisters, it was difficult for over a decade. Only when the actress was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013, her sister kept a celebratory event amongst the family members. Following the occasion, the differences were rumoured to be resolved.

After Sridevi's demise...

After Sridevi’s demise, Srilatha was infamously absent during the prayers in Chennai. However, the source stated, “Srilatha has been asked to remain quiet and out of the picture. We don't know why. We've also heard that Srilatha and her husband Satish will be given ownership of Sridevi's bungalow in Chennai,” according to the Deccan Chronicle.
The reports further stated that all the properties were bought with Sridevi’s hard-earned money. However, the ownership was registered under the parents’ names for tax purposes since she was a minor.
During the last rites, Sridevi was draped in the tricolour in the glass casket. Many fans accompanied the truck, while the police gave a gun salute before the cremation. The family members, including Boney Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, and Arjun Kapoor, were in the truck along with her.
Many celebrities paid their respect to the legendary actress, including Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Aishwarya Rai, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Deepika Padukone, Hema Malini, Kajol, Ajay Devgn, Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, and more.
