Psychological horror fans now have plenty to look forward to as The Summer Hikaru Died's eagerly awaited anime adaptation prepares for its summer 2025 premiere. The heroes Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indo are shown standing in Kubitachi Village, the creepy backdrop of the narrative, under a wide blue sky in a striking new key graphic that was recently released on the official website.
'The Summer Hikaru Died,' originally by Mokukokuren, has been serialized since August 2021 on Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace Up online edition. The manga has received praise from critics, ranking first on Kono Manga ga Sugoi!'s 2023 list of male readers, and being nominated for several important prizes, including as the Manga Taisho and Tsutaya. The Next Manga Award, the Eisner Award, and the Comic Awards. The series has already captured the attention of horror and suspense fans all around the world, with six tankobon volumes presently available in Japan.
Ryohei Takeshita (Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night) is the director and series composer of the anime adaptation, with principal animation director and character designer Yuichi Takahashi (Vivy from Fluorite Eye's Song). Also joining the crew as the "Dorodoro" animator is Masanobu Hiraoka, who is well-known for his work as an episode director on Chainsaw Man. After its launch, the series will be available for streaming worldwide.
The main focus of the story is Yoshiki, a little child who discovers that Hikaru, his best friend, is no longer human. Even while Hikaru looks the same, the same voice, the same face, the same memories, a darker side is now there. As he attempts to keep things somewhat normal in their little village, Yoshiki is confronted with the terrible reality and the issue of what exactly came from the mountains that night.
