Historic verdict: SC rules gay sex is not a crime; what is Section 377?

It is a landmark day for the country with India's top court ruling that homosexuality is no longer a crime. In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court today said sex between consenting adults of the same gender is not an offence under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. An archaic British law from 1861, Section 377 states: 'Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to pay a fine.' Calling Section 377 arbitrary and irrational, the five-judge bench was unanimous in its decision to decriminalise homosexuality, saying intimacy in private is a matter of choice.
