Big move for education: UGC may soon be replaced by a new regulator

In one of the biggest moves towards reforming higher education in India, the Modi government announced a complete overhaul of the apex higher education regulator- University Grants Commission, repeal of the UGC Act, 1951 and a fresh legislation to set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). The draft law, called the Higher Education Commission of India Act, 2018 (Repeal of University Grants Commission Act), has been uploaded on the HRD ministry website and will be available for feedback till 5 pm on July 7.
