James Webb Space Telescope studies cosmic explosion

Danny Milisavljevic is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University and is a collaborator on the James Webb Space Telescope. He was featured in an episode of 60 Minutes on April 9. Milisavljevic leads a team of nearly 40 scientists in the study of Cassiopeia A, a supernova remnant. A new image of this cosmic explosion was recently released to the public. The James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful telescope ever launched into space and is designed to study galaxies at the edge of the observable universe. The JWST does this thanks to instruments that are sensitive to infrared light. Cassiopeia A formed after a star exploded, leaving behind cooler clouds of gas that can be analyzed using the infrared tools on the James Webb telescope. Milisavljevic and his team hope to use this data from Webb to answer questions about how supernova occur and the raw materials they leave behind. Elements that make life possible like iron, calcium, and oxygen all trace their origins back to supernova explosions.
