In 2014, he was a part of the India Under-19 cricket team at the ICC World Cup. In the same year, he received an IPL contract by the Rajasthan Royals. He made his debut for the Royals against the Kings XI Punjab in the 2015 IPL.
Hooda first gained attention when he scored his first double-century in first-class cricket playing for Baroda in the fourth round of the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy. In
November 2017, he was chosen in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) team for their series against Sri Lanka.
For the 2018 edition of the IPL, he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the auction.
