Star wide receiver Davante Adams is once again looking for a new team after a brief tenure with the New York Jets. The three-time All-Pro was officially released by the franchise on Tuesday, setting the stage for him to test free agency for the first time in his career. The decision comes after the Jets' unsuccessful attempts to trade Adams, despite previously entertaining trade offers. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report Adams' release, signaling a major shake-up in New York's roster.
Davante Adams Hits Free Agency After Short Stint with the New York Jets
Davante Adams' time in New York lasted just over half a season. He was acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders on October 15 in exchange for a third-round pick, a move that was seen as a reunion with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The duo had previously spent eight seasons together in Green Bay, where Adams established himself as one of the league's most dominant receivers. However, the chemistry that once made them one of the most feared QB-WR duos in the NFL did not translate as effectively in New York.
While Adams still performed at a high level—recording 85 receptions for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games—the Jets struggled as a whole. Their 5-12 finish prompted a significant restructuring of the team. With Rodgers also departing ahead of the 2025 season, the organization decided to part ways with Adams as well. The move clears almost $30 million in cap space for the 2025 season and gives the Jets flexibility to reshape their roster moving forward.
At 32 years old, Adams remains one of the league’s most productive receivers and is expected to have no shortage of interest in free agency. His impressive track record includes five consecutive Pro Bowl selections during his Green Bay years before he was traded to the Raiders in 2022, where he continued to shine with another Pro Bowl appearance alongside Derek Carr.
Despite the Jets' struggles, Adams showcased his ability to produce at an elite level, hauling in 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games with Rodgers as his quarterback. Given his history of success, it wouldn’t be surprising to see teams eager to add him to their rosters.
One of the most intriguing possibilities remains another potential reunion with Rodgers. While Rodgers' next destination is still uncertain, there is always a chance that the two could join forces once again if circumstances align. Whether that happens or not, Adams is sure to be one of the most sought-after free agents when the market opens next week.
