NEW DELHI: The captaincy of the U-19 Indian team may not have come under the best circumstances for Delhi's
Unmukt Chand, but it has opened up the gates for him to emulate another famous son of the city -
Virat Kohli.
Appointed skipper for the quadrangular series from September 27 in Vishakhapatnam, Unmukt has his sights on winning the U-19 World Cup in Australia next year.
Being named captain hasn't come to him as a surprise. "I always knew that it would be either Ankit or me," said Unmukt while conceding that it's unfortunate that the team had to lose Bawne who has been in the firstclass arena for three seasons.
With Bawne almost ruled out of the 2012 World Cup, the Delhi opener realizes that he is likely to lead the team in the mega event.
However, Unmukt, who has also been a part of the Delhi Daredevils in the last IPL season, is not weighed down by the prospect. "I've already captained the Delhi under-19 team. I like to keep things simple. My primary job will be to score as many runs as possible as a batsman," asserted Unmukt, who made his mark in the domestic circuit with a knock of 151 runs against the Railways in his debut season last year.
He also mentioned that Kohli and Pradeep Sangwan - both were part of the U-19 World Cup-winning squad in 2008 - have asked him to take one game at a time. "Virat told me to stay calm and keep scoring. The rest will follow," said a confident Unmukt who believes that his real inspiration comes from within.
