In today’s world of digital frauds, scammers often have the upper hand. However, every once in a while, we come across a story where the victim turns the tables on the scammer– outsmarting them at their own game. One such story comes from Kanpur, where a young man not only escaped the hands of a scam but also ended up taking ₹10,000 from the fraudster.
The initial scam call
According to a report presented by India Today, it all began with a phone call that many people dread. Bhupendra Singh, a young man from Kanpur, received a call from someone pretending to be a CBI officer. The fraudster claimed to have compromising videos of Bhupendra and threatened to take legal action unless he paid a bribe. Though this would have sent many into panic mode, Bhupendra sensed something wasn’t quite right. Instead of reacting out of fear, he decided to think on his feet.
Turning the tables: Bhupendra’s quick thinking

Rather than panicking, Bhupendra played along, acting as though he was extremely distressed. As per the report, he told the scammer, “Uncle, please don’t tell my mother, or I’ll be in huge trouble.” The scammer, seeing an opportunity, demanded ₹16,000 to settle the matter. But Bhupendra wasn’t ready to give up that much money so easily.
Thinking on his feet, Bhupendra cleverly made up a story. He told the scammer that he had pawned a gold chain and needed ₹3,000 to get it back. Believing this was part of the bribe, the scammer fell for the trap and transferred ₹3,000 to Bhupendra’s account, according to the media report.
The scammer falls for more deceptions
A few days later, the scammer called Bhupendra again, demanding more money. But Bhupendra wasn’t done playing along. He made up another story, claiming the jeweler had refused to release the gold chain because he was a minor. To fix the issue, he suggested that the scammer pose as his father.

Taking it a step further, Bhupendra had a friend pretend to be the jeweler and speak to the scammer. Completely convinced by the act, the fraudster sent another ₹4,480, thinking it would resolve the situation, according to the report.
The scammer gets duped again
Bhupendra’s final trick was yet to come. When the fraudster called once more, Bhupendra made up yet another story. According to the report, he claimed he had secured a gold loan, but to proceed, he needed ₹3,000 for a processing fee. The scammer, still unaware that he was being tricked, transferred the requested amount to Bhupendra’s account.
By the time the scammer realized what had happened, Bhupendra had successfully extracted ₹10,000 from him. But the fraudster wasn’t ready to give up just yet. The report suggests that he began pleading, saying, “You’ve wronged me. Please return my money.”
Bhupendra takes action
Despite the scammer’s desperate pleas, Bhupendra wasn’t backing down. He reported the incident to the police, and as per the India Today report, he also revealed that the ₹10,000 he had received would be donated to someone in need.

The takeaway: Outsmarting cyber fraudsters
This incident serves as a reminder that staying calm and thinking clearly can sometimes be the best defense against cyber fraud. Bhupendra's ability to stay composed and use his wits turned what could have been a victimization into a win.
While scammers continue to devise new ways to trap people, Bhupendra’s story proves that, with quick thinking and a little creativity, they can be outsmarted. In the end, the fraudster became the one who lost money, and Bhupendra emerged victorious, showing that even in a world full of scams, wit can sometimes win the day.
