Aju Varghese is not yet to ready to experiment with dialects
ActorAju Varghese, who plays Jayasurya’s friend in Ranjith Sankar’s Punyalan Agarbathis, was excited to be part of the project for two reasons. First, it required him to shoot at some of the historical spots in Thrissur. Second, the entire cast was to speak in the native Thrissur dialect.
“When I came to know that the movie is based in Thrissur and that everybody would be mouthing the dialect, I jumped at the opportunity, as I love listening to all sorts of native dialects,” says Aju.

However, if you have watched the film, you would have noticed that Aju is not speaking Thrissur dialect in it at all!
The actor explains that though he was initially overjoyed to speak like a Trichurian, he soon realised that it is no cakewalk. “I tried but failed miserably. Finally, the director had to tweak my character, Greenu Sharma. And I am portrayed as somebody who is educated outside Kerala. It was a sort of escapism,” says Aju, adding that it is too early to experiment with dialects in his career.
“In Thattathin Marayathu too I don’t speak in a pucca Thalassery accent, even though the story was set there. But my co-stars like Nivin (Pauly) handled the dialect perfectly,” says the Kili Poyi actor, who has just wrapped up the shoot of Jude Antony Joseph’s Om ShantiOshana.
About his role in the film, Aju says it is not a sidekick role like his other movies. “I play the role of David Kanjani. It is a small role; I am hardly there in six scenes. I play Nivin’s childhood friend. But at some point, David develops ill-feelings for his friend, making everybody doubt about their amity,” says Aju.
The actor has also signed up for M Padmakumar’s Polytechnic, in which he plays a Communist leader. “It is a social satire set in a rural area. I play Kunchacko Boban’s childhood friend in this movie,” he says.
