Mountaineers scaled unclimbed high peak, names it 'Tsangyang Gyatso Peak’ after Sixth Dalai Lama

NEW DELHI: A team of mountaineering has successfully scaled an unnamed and unclimbed high peak in Gorichen range of Arunachal Pradesh Himalayas and named it ‘Tsangyang Gyatso Peak’ in honour of the 6th Dalai Lama.
According to public relations officer of defence in Guwahati, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) scaled one of the most technically challenging and unexplored summits in the region.
The team faced numerous obstacles, including treacherous crevasses, steep ice walls, and a 2-kilometre-long glacier. To commemorate their achievement, the team has named the peak "Tsangyang Gyatso Peak" in honour of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama Rigzen Tsangyang Gyatso.

The PRO added that by naming the peak after the 6th Dalai Lama, NIMAS aims to honour his enduring wisdom and significant contributions to the Monpa community and beyond.
The release stated that the expedition to conquer "Tsangyang Gyatso Peak" was one of the most challenging ever undertaken by the NIMAS team. The route was riddled with hazardous crevasses, steep ice walls, and unpredictable weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, the team's determination and collaboration enabled them to navigate the challenges and reach the summit, making history in the process, ANI News Agency reported.
NIMAS, a leading institution in adventure and mountaineering in India, has informed the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) about the successful ascent and the decision to name the peak. The necessary procedures for naming the peak are being completed to ensure that "Tsangyang Gyatso Peak" is officially recognised on the map.
The release added that this historic climb not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh but also establishes the region as a prime destination for mountaineering and adventure sports, attracting explorers and adventure enthusiasts from around the world.
