According to , Sonu had revealed that during the recording of songs for '1942: A Love Story', Kumar Sanu was the chosen playback singer and was expected at the studio. But when he didn’t arrive on time, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra became very upset.
Pancham Da Gave Sonu a ray of hope
Legendary composer R.D. Burman (Pancham Da) noticed Sonu Nigam waiting and told him that if Kumar didn’t show up soon, he’d let Sonu sing the song. Sonu later revealed that he quietly prayed for Kumar to miss the session. Unfortunately for Sonu, Kumar Sanu arrived just in time and recorded the song. Sonu later said he was disappointed but respected the outcome, which became a turning point in Bollywood music history.
