KALABURAGI : An argument over the quality of chapatis served in the mess of the boys’ hostel at Central University of Karnataka escalated into clashes on campus over two days, leaving at least eight post-graduate students injured.
The clash prompted police to baton-charge those trying to foment trouble ahead of the institute's eighth con- vocation ceremony.
The confrontation started on Friday night when a batch of students complained about chapati makers being used instead of serving handmade rotis, which the students insisted was better in quality.
Another group disagreed, at which both sides came to blows inside the dining hall of the hostel at Kadaganchi village in Aland ta- luk, around 30 km from Kalaburagi and around 650 km from Bengaluru.
An injured student had to be hospitalised, leading to a second clash. Police said some students allegedly barged into several hostel rooms that night, threatening those belonging to the other group.
On Saturday morning, seven more students were injured in a second round of clash outside the library building, leading the university authorities to call police to campus.
Kalaburagi SP Adduru Srinivasulu told TOIthat after forcing the crowd of students to disperse, the police team warned both sides of arrests and prosecution if there was more violence.
Srinivasulu said the university authorities filed a complaint but didn’t name any student.
