The bond between Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin is one of the most storied partnerships in NHL history. But as Ovechkin inches closer to becoming the greatest goal-scorer the game has ever seen, Backstrom has been forced to watch from a distance. After years of setting up countless Ovechkin goals, the Washington Capitals’ all-time assists leader is now sidelined, battling his own challenges. And for the first time, he’s opening up about what it feels like to witness his longtime teammate on the brink of history.
Nicklas Backstrom’s perspective: Watching Ovechkin’s record quest from afar
Top 10 Nicklas Backstrom Moments From His NHL Career...So Far
Backstrom, who has assisted on 279 of Ovechkin’s 888 career goals, has had a front-row seat to greatness for nearly two decades. However, lingering issues with his left hip—requiring resurfacing surgery in 2022, have kept him from being part of this particular chapter in Ovechkin’s legendary career.
“It’s pretty incredible if you look at it,” Backstrom said during a recent media session. “I think we all thought maybe it was going to be a little setback when he got hurt there midseason, but it’s so impressive. He’s always been a great goal-scorer, and for him to be seven goals away from becoming the greatest of all time, I’m happy for him. It’s really fun to watch.”
Ovechkin, who missed 16 games due to a fractured left fibula earlier this season, remains relentless in his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record. And while Backstrom is proud of his teammate, he doesn’t hide the fact that watching from the sidelines has been tough.
Backstrom on feeling FOMO as Ovechkin makes history
When asked if he’s feeling any “Fear of Missing Out” (F.O.M.O.) as Ovechkin closes in on history, Backstrom didn’t hesitate with his response.
“A hundred percent,” he admitted. “I would love to be part of it.”
After 17 seasons together, the two have built a legacy of winning. They’ve made the playoffs in 15 of those years, won three Presidents’ Trophies, and in 2018, lifted the Stanley Cup together—a moment Backstrom describes as more of a relief than just pure joy.
“It was a pretty special moment when we won together,” Backstrom recalled. “To people outside, it looked like a happy moment. It was more like a relief for both of us, like, ‘Finally, we got it done.’”
