For the second straight year, the
Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers are facing off in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The tension between them is no secret, especially between guards
Damian Lillard and Tyrese Haliburton.
The rivalry, which started brewing during the 2023-24 season, has only intensified with frequent matchups. Even with Lillard sidelined in Game 1, he managed to stir things up, exchanging words with Haliburton and Pacers forward Pascal Siakam. The altercation earned Lillard and Siakam double technical fouls—a rare occurrence for an inactive player.
What sparked the latest exchange between Damian Lillard and Tyrese Haliburton?
The tension flared up late in Game 1 as the Indiana Pacers held off a
Milwaukee Bucks comeback. After Giannis Antetokounmpo fouled Tyrese Haliburton with under two minutes left, Bucks coach Doc Rivers called a timeout to challenge the call. As Haliburton walked toward Indiana’s bench, Damian Lillard confronted him.
Lillard appeared to say, "That s— you talking down there," followed by a clear warning: "You gon see." The message seemed directed at Haliburton, hinting at Lillard’s impending return from injury. Teammates quickly stepped in to prevent escalation, but the moment set the stage for a heated series—especially if Lillard returns for Game 2.
The history behind the Lillard-Haliburton feud
This isn’t the first time the two guards have exchanged words. Their rivalry traces back to the 2023 NBA In-Season Tournament semifinals in Las Vegas. With the
Pacers leading late, Haliburton sank a clutch three-pointer and mocked Lillard by mimicking his signature "Dame Time" celebration.
Mic’d up during the game, Haliburton looked at his wrist and taunted, "Y'all know what time it is!" After the win, he avoided calling out Lillard directly, saying, "It's our time. It’s our time as a group."
Lillard responded with a mix of respect and warning. "For as many times as I’ve done it to people, I can't be upset when somebody else does it," he said. "I've also known that when you’re having your moment, it’s important to be careful and to be humble... because you just never know how the tables turn and when they're gonna turn."
The Pacers have dominated recent meetings, but Lillard’s potential return could shift momentum. With Game 2 approaching, fans are waiting to see if the trash talk turns into on-court fireworks. If Lillard gets back in action, this rivalry could reach another level.
