Delhi Directorate of Education releases circular directing schools to phase out single-use plastic

Delhi Directorate of Education (DDE) has issued a circular on its official website instructing all heads of government and government-aided recognised schools to avoid the use of single-use plastics (SUP). This directive has been issued in accordance with an advisory from the Department of Environment, which highlights the environmental hazards associated with the use of SUPs.
The circular reads, “The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India has notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, on 12/8/2021 under the provisions of Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and as amended to date, has mandated banning of 19 identified Single Use Plastic (SUP) items. Use of the following SUP items should be discouraged and eliminated for use in day-to-day life and instead, eco-friendly alternatives may be adopted.”
The circular provides a detailed explanation of the detrimental impact SUPs have on the ecosystem due to their non-biodegradable nature. It specifies that numerous items classified as SUPs, such as carry bags, packaging films, straws, and cups, are lightweight and can be easily carried by wind or mixed with other solid waste. This can lead to blockages in drainage and sewer systems, thereby contributing to waterlogging.
This initiative reflects the efforts undertaken by educational institutions to foster a sustainable framework that works consciously to avert climate change.
The circular has also attached the advisory of the Department of Environment advising authorities to support the discontinuance of SUPs in their departments and organizations.
