AGRA: A 28-year-old man allegedly disguised himself as a woman in a lehenga, entered his lover's house in Mathura district and set her on fire after she refused to elope with him, police said on Wednesday.
Rekha Kumari (30), a resident of Koh village, was watching television at home while her husband was at work and her children were in school when the accused, Umesh Singh, a labourer from Haryana's Palwal district, entered carrying a bottle of petrol.
In his complaint, Rekha's husband, Sanju (34), a farm labourer, said: "Umesh entered my house from the terrace on Tuesday, walked into her room and pressured her to leave with him. When she refused, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He then attempted to escape by jumping from the terrace but sustained injuries."
SHO Farah Police Station, Sanjay Kumar Pandey, said, "Neighbours rushed to her aid after hearing her screams and informed the police. Rekha was taken to the community health centre and later referred to Agra's SN Medical College. She sustained 70% burn injuries."
He added, "Umesh was a frequent visitor to Rekha's house, and their relationship developed over time. In Aug last year, Rekha had left home with him, prompting her family to file a police complaint. She was later brought back from Himachal Pradesh. Following this, she distanced herself from Umesh. On Tuesday, when she again refused to leave with him, he attempted to kill her in a fit of rage."
A case has been registered against Umesh under BNS sections 109 (attempt to murder), 74 (outraging modesty of a woman) and 333 (trespassing). He is currently undergoing treatment, police said.
