The second general election debate of the 2024 campaign season is here, marking the first face-off between the current nominees. This second debate will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, without a live audience, similar to the June debate. Pennsylvania, a critical swing state, holds significance for both candidates, with Harris having selected Philadelphia to announce her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Trump having campaigned extensively in the state.

This will be the first time Harris and Trump meet on a debate stage, and the first debate for Harris since her 2020 vice-presidential face-off with Mike Pence. With Biden exiting the race, there was uncertainty over whether Trump would debate Harris, but both campaigns have agreed to this match.

The debate will follow the same format as the June event, including the controversial muting of microphones to prevent interruptions during speaking turns, a rule agreed upon by both campaigns.
Following this debate, CBS News will host a vice-presidential debate on 1 October between Walz and Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, in New York City.
