WASHINGTON: Two prominent Indian-American Republican candidates currently in the thick of US electoral battles are involved in spats with the traditionally Democratic black constituencies and organisations.
In Louisiana, Governor-aspirant Bobby Jindal, who rode to victory in the primaries on the strength of a conservative platform, was misidentified as an "Arab-American" by the local College Democrats of America (CDA) in a recent memo seeking to rally support for their candidate.
Referring to the Indian-American Republican as "Bush''s personal ''Do Boy'' Bobby Jindal," the memo said "Jindal is Arab American and the Republicans token attempt to mend bridges long burnt with the Arab American community."
CDA president Ashley Bell later apologised for misidentifying Jindal''s ethnicity but did not back off from other sentiments in an election campaign that is expected to get rougher in a 30 per cent black state where Jindal is fighting on a mostly white-Christian platform.
