Why Goa is creating women-only zones on its popular beaches

The tourism explosion in the tiny state has also led to a surge of voyeurs. ‘Was groped, catcalled at Arambol…’ posted a frequent visitor to the state on social media, triggering a movement for exclusive zones for women. But many feel this is not the right approach to tackle the problem

For decades, Goa has been a haven for free-spirited travellers, a place where women could sunbathe, swim, and stroll along the shoreline without a second thought. But a disturbing change is creeping into this coastal idyll.
And the reason is men, some of them at least. These beaches have now become spots for some to ogle women. Unnerved by this, some women have convinced the state’s tourism department and the state-appointed lifeguards to demarcate stretches of the beach where they can swim comfortably, in bikinis and swimsuits, without men for an audience.
