Service charge on menu: Delhi HC grants relief to hospitality industry, stays CCPA guidelines

Granting relief to restaurants and hospitality industries, Delhi High Court stayed the Central Consumer Protection Authority’s (CCPA) July 4 guidelines that barred restaurants and hotels from levying a service charge on food bills. The court noted that the matter requires consideration. The court said that till the next date of listing, the CCPA guidelines shall remain stayed. The court also recorded an undertaking that the service charge will not be included in the bill for takeaway orders. The next date of hearing is expected to be November 25. National Restaurant Association of India and the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India had challenged the CCPA guidelines in court.
