Munawar Faruqui requests Meerut Police to reconsider the Eid Namaz ban; says ' People have been doing this for ages; let them do it. It is just a matter of a day'

Comedian Munawar Faruqui called on Meerut Police to reconsider its decision against offering namaz on streets, stressing that festivals are often celebrated in public spaces. Days after expressing his dissatisfaction with the Meerut Police's decision to prohibit individuals from offering namaz on the streets, Munawar Faruqui posted an almost four-minute video to justify his reaction. On Sunday, the comedian resorted to Instagram to broadcast a video in which he expressed his concern and asked the Meerut Police to reconsider their judgment while smiling. He went on: "Nobody purposely performs namaz on the street."

Should the government intervene in religious practices during festivals?
Munawar began the video with a clarification that, "This is no criticism or any political video. It’s just that last night I read the news, which stated that Meerut Police have passed orders against reading namaz on the streets. They have warned strict actions against people who will read namaz on streets. Their driving licence will be apparently snatched." Munawar then stated that Indians have been celebrating all of their festivities on the streets.
He used the example of Janmashtami, when people bind handis on the streets and form a human pyramid to break them as part of the holiday. He stated, "India is regarded beautiful because of its festivals. We used to have preferred teams on Janmashtami. We used to talk of the highest hand being placed on the streets."

He compared the Meerut Police to the Mumbai Police and discussed how cooperative they have been throughout festivals. Munawar commended the Mumbai police and the state administration for allowing individuals to offer namaz on the streets.
He further added, “Just next to Hamidiya Masjid, there is Bamba Devi’s temple, aarti for which is performed on the same streets. We have been seeing all this since childhood.” He added, “I just want to request the Meerut Police to reconsider their decision. All the political rallies happen on the streets; every time we have a VIP travelling, the same streets are blocked. Indian citizens have all the rights to celebrate their festival on streets.”
Munawar went on to explaining why there is a need to perform Namaz on street during Eid, he shared, “People read namaz in masjid only, but on the day of Eid as too many people come out to Masjids at the same time to perform namaz, an arrangement is made on streets to give the crowd a space to perform namaz for 30 minutes. People have been doing this for ages; let them do it. It is just a matter of a day.”
The comic stated that all of our freedom fighters, including BR Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Raj Guru, and Swami Vivekananda, spent their entire lives fighting for people's rights. "I feel that everyone has the right to enjoy their holiday and pray. So, please reconsider your decision."
He added, “In Dongri, after we perform namaz on Eid, the police there give us roses. There, too, we perform namaz on streets. It is very important to share love. So please don’t pass orders that can harm harmony.”
While concluding the video, Munawar shared, “I request all my Muslim brothers, too, that if you find a peaceful environment to perform namaz, then surely do it; if not then look for a space in masjid or some place where nobody else is troubled. They say, all good deeds are being written, similarly all our cruelty too is being written and I don’t think our country should head that way.”

Earlier, Munawar had reacted to Meerut Police's announcement on his Instagram handle where he wrote, “30 minutes ki namaz ke liye yeh? Kya ab koi bhi festival Bharat ke roads pe nahi hoga? (All this for a 30-minute prayer? Will no festival in India now be allowed on the roads?)”
