Fans of the British crime drama, Sherlock, were in for a treat when the makers of the series released a special seven-minute mini-episode in the run up to the premiere of its much-anticipated third series. But the Indian fans had more than one reason to be surprised, because the Delhi Police made an appearance in that episode. The show returns on January 1 after a two-year hiatus, and picks up after the second series, in which Sherlock Holmes, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, faked his own death.
In the mini-episode, Detective Anderson is trying to convince Inspector Lestrade that Sherlock is alive by explaining how some complex crimes have been solved in different parts of the world in typical Sherlock style, and one of those crimes happened in Delhi.

With a Middle Eastern version of the Sherlock theme playing in the background, we see Inspector Prakesh (as he is later identified) explaining to the journalists how he tracked down the killer by “working out the depth to which the chocolate flake had sunk into the victim’s ice cream cone”. Anderson later says what’s on everyone’s mind – “Which inspector can come to that deduction,” – but Lestrade is still not convinced. The inspector is then shown thanking his “friend”, who solved the case and did not take any credit for it. Even though the face remains hidden, we see the silhouette of the famous long coat of the detective standing in the lobby.
The makers have tried to get the setting right, by keeping a plastic bottle of water and a tangled mess of the many media mics on the table in front of the officers, but it doesn’t look very authentic. After being released online, the tweets on the episode started coming in, and while some dissed the incorrect depiction of the Delhi Police, some were just glad that Sherlock made it to the capital.
