Patti Scialfa is opening up for the first time about her battle with multiple myeloma, a diagnosis she received in 2018. The 71-year-old E Street Band member, who has been performing with the band since 1984, reveals her struggles in the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The film, which premiered on September 8 at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows the band as they prepare for and embark on their first tour since 2017.

In the documentary, Scialfa shares that her diagnosis came while she and her husband, Bruce Springsteen, were working on a play on Broadway. She explains how the blood cancer, which affects her immune system, has made touring more challenging. “Touring has become a challenge for me,” she admits. “I just have to be careful about what I choose to do and where I choose to go.”

Despite the difficulties, Scialfa remains committed to her passion for performing. She still joins the band onstage occasionally, singing a few songs when she can. One of her favorite moments is performing the 1977 song "Fire" with Springsteen, a duet she describes as "very personal" and a reflection of their relationship.
