A new character, Bramhananda Tantrik, is being introduced in the serial, Mahatirtha Kalighat. Played by
Debesh Roy Chowdhury on screen, Bramhananda is an ardent devotee of Maa Kali and lives in the Nirgiri hills. He has dedicated his entire life to the worship the goddess, who, in turn, had promised him that she wouldn’t leave him without his consent. But Goddess Kali always wanted to be worshipped by the masses. And that’s why he dedicated a sacred rock to her name. That sacred rock is worshipped as the touchstone in Kalighat temple even today.
Speaking about his character, Debesh said, “For an actor, every role is challenging. And I’m really happy to be working in a television show after a long time. My character, Bramhananda, is a historical figure. Though there is no written history of the Kalighat temple, myth goes that Bramhananda was one of the pillars behind the establishment of the temple, which is now the centerpiece of Kali worship in Bengal and India.”
The actor went to add that the serial revolves around Uma, a simple five-year-old village girl who lives with her parents and is a devotee of Lord Krishna. “She is a blessed child and has been chosen by Maa Kali at birth to spread awareness about her among the common people. Uma's journey reveals the conflict of two different cults — Boishnab and Shakto. And through many dramatic ups and downs, how people of Bengal realised the true nature of Maa Kali and started worshipping her,’’ he said.
