This man-made lake turned Meghalaya into a dreamy destination

Given the lake’s strategic location, one can always start their fun and adventurous Meghalaya episode with a little detour, a quick stopover at Umiam Lake. The lake is just 20 km from the capital city of Shillong. The stopover will not only be refreshing, but it will also give plenty of time to click pretty pictures for the ‘gram’.
How did the lake come about?
Umiam Lake is not a natural lake, though looks may be deceiving. This pretty (and big) lake is actually a reservoir, which is formed by damming the Umiam River. The water is as blue as they come on clear days. If you are visiting Meghalaya during monsoon, the colour may vary. But most of the time it is emerald blue and lush green surroundings. The pine forest everywhere definitely adds to the charm.
Did you know that this scenic lake spans approximately 220 sq km? Umiam Lake is also called Bara Pani for the same reason.

It’s obvious that something so beautiful will be turned into a tourist destination. Umiam Lake’s proximity to Shillong makes it a great destination for a quick day trip. Nowadays, there are also fun water-based activities like boating, kayaking and fishing. Umiam Lake is also one of the venues for the annual kayaking event in Meghalaya.
