It’s not just on the field that the Indian Premier League (IPL) season is in full swing, the frenzy plays out at de-addiction centres across the country as well. At Chennai-based psychiatrist Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar’s clinic, those addicted to IPL betting begin to show up almost as soon as the first ball is bowled.
“They’re usually brought in by family members who notice sudden changes in behaviour such as anger, anxiety, or withdrawal, or when debts pile up and collection agents come knocking,” she says.
