Zerodha CEO shares courier scam video that he wants you to share with everyone
Nithin Kamath, CEO of online brokerage firm Zerodha, is urging caution against an online scam targeting Indian citizens. Through a social media post, Kamath shared a video highlighting the modus operandi of the scammers and appealed to everyone to spread awareness.
The scam involves fraudsters impersonating officials from courier companies like FedEx or Blue Dart. They contact unsuspecting victims via phone or video call, often using tactics to create panic. These tactics include:
  • False accusations: The scammers accuse the victim of receiving a package containing illegal items.
  • Fake authority: They pose as representatives of law enforcement agencies like the CBI or the Crime Branch, further amplifying the fear.
  • "Digital Arrest" threat: They intimidate the victim with a fabricated concept of "digital arrest," threatening legal repercussions if they don't cooperate.
Kamath's social media post includes a video that showcases the scam tactics. He urges everyone to share the video and the information with their family and friends, particularly the elderly who might be more susceptible to such tactics.

Here is the post shared by Kamath on X (formerly known as Twitter) about the online scam.

Imagine this:
You get an unexpected call from a courier company. The representative tells you that the police have held a parcel of yours because it has drugs and other illegal items. They even disclose some personal details, like your Aadhaar number, etc. Soon, you'll also get calls from police, CBI, etc.
This is the beginning of courier scams that have just exploded in recent years. These scams are so realistic that most of us would probably fall for them regardless of how smart we are because they take advantage of our fears.

Every day, hundreds of people lose lakhs of their hard-earned money to these scams. Recently, the Zero1 team spoke to an actual scammer and recorded the call to break down and explain how this scam works. Watch it and share it with your friends and family.
Under this fabricated pressure, the scammers exploit the fear of legal trouble. They manipulate victims into disclosing personal details and even coerce them into transferring money to supposedly clear their name.

Staying safe from scams:

Here are some key tips to avoid falling victim to this or similar scams:
  • Never share personal or financial information over unsolicited calls or video calls.
  • Government agencies and banks will never contact you via social media platforms for financial investigations.
  • Be wary of callers who create a sense of urgency or fear.
  • If unsure about a call, end it and contact the relevant authorities directly using phone numbers obtained from official websites.
  • Always discuss suspicious communications with family members or trusted friends.
