Humane is selling itself to HP for $116 million and shutting down the AI Pin
has acquired the majority of Humane's assets for $116 million, marking the end of the ambitious AI Pin wearable device that aimed to replace smartphones. Humane announced Tuesday that it will cease all AI Pin sales immediately and discontinue service for existing devices on February 28, 2025.
The acquisition brings Humane's technology stack and engineering talent to HP, but notably excludes the hardware business behind the controversial AI Pin. Humane's founders, former Apple executives Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, will lead a new HP division called HP IQ, focused on integrating artificial intelligence across HP's product lineup.
Existing AI Pin users have until February 28 to download their data before the devices lose core functionality, including calling, messaging, and AI features. Only customers who purchased their devices within the last 90 days will be eligible for refunds, which must be claimed by February 27.
The $116 deal is a significant markdown from Humane's earlier acquisition aspirations, which reportedly ranged from $750 million to $1 billion in May 2024. The startup, which had raised over $230 million in venture funding, faced mounting challenges after the AI Pin's launch, including poor reviews, technical issues, and a battery fire risk that prompted a charging case recall.
HP will acquire more than 300 patents and patent applications, along with Humane's CosmOS operating system. According to HP executive Tuan Tran, the company plans to leverage Humane's expertise in AI orchestration across cloud and local computing to enhance its existing product lines, including personal computers, printers, and conference room systems.
